Advice on what breed to get.
« on: September 07, 2006, 06:33 »
I haven't got chickens yet but am hoping to in the next few months (when I can talk hubby round!).  I have got a terraced house with a small garden and am on the waiting list to get an allotment (which allows the chickens).
I am thinking of bantams, but what sort would you recommend?  Pekings are recommended for an urban garden but I like the look of Sussex Bantams. I would only have two, would they wreck the grass?
Any help gratefully received

I assume you're looking for eggs so I'd suggest hybrid layers - Black Rocks or Speckledy would be my choice.
You could also consider saving some ex-battery hens - see my pal Richard's website Down The Lane

We have 5 Bantams, White Silkies. They are lovely birds, though we have not had any eggs as yet from them.

As John says if its just eggs you want then go for hybred.

Thanks for your replies, I would like good layers but are limited on size due to size of my garden, my allotment plot is only going to be small too.  I'm off to look at the "down the lane" website for more tips,
Thanks again.

Have you tried .Broad Leys because Katie Thear is an expert on poultry

Down the Lane is Richard's web site that has a fair bit about chickens on it.
