Giant pumpkin help
« on: May 04, 2015, 20:17 »
for a bit of fun several of out plot holders are running a completion of who can grow the biggest pumpkin. I have the plant growing well in the greenhouse, my query is what to feed it with once I plant it out

I have access to well rotted manure and seaweed . I had thought of digging a pit say 2 ft by 2 ft x 2 ft deep and filling it with either seaweed or manure and planting direct in this
a plot neighbour of mine has great results with potato's and seaweed are pumpkins the same?
I already have a water butt full of diluted manure feed and will also half bury a bottle or two so that the water gets down to the root system

any other tips greatly appreciated as being the competitive person I  want to do my best

i grew one many years ago when i was a kid, i fed that with beer slops from the local pub. it seemed to do well with that.

i have heard of people growing squash in the compost or manure pile while it's maturing so guessing lots of manure would be a good way.

I once heard a champion pumpkin grower speak & he dug out a cubic metre of soil filled with well rotted manure & covered with soil. He also allowed only 2 fruit per plant, the second as a security against the first one exploding, a bit like a pressure cooker. Can't remember what he fed it with though. Mind you they have special seeds too. So I think your plan of 2x2 filled with manure sounds good, you could mulch with seaweed or use it to make a liquid feed

I haven't managed to get my seeds to germinate yet! Perhaps not going to grow a monster this year!  :D
My favourite weed is a raspberry ;)
