Is there an easy way to find my local Allotment Association to see what their prices are? Google doesn't seem to be hitting-the-spot (with the keywords I am using)
sorry to say this kristen but i think your allotment association is on the site where you are. if you have an association.

Our (small) site doesn't have an association but the local on allows associate membership for a quid which means you can use their shop.

Maybe the NSALG have a list of affiliated local societies. If not what about your local council allotment officer.

http://www.nsalg.org.uk/
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.

BFB 2 for £4 in wilkinsons  :)

Elaine

Does anyone know how good the Wilkinsons own brand BFB is compared to the branded stuff. Is it the same quality and strength (no idea how you would measure that)!

There should be an NPK ratio on the box.  Blood, Fish and Bone is usually 6-6-6, although Arthur Bowers is 5-5-6.5 I think - so some variation.

So long as all three figures are the same, or nearly so, then it is a "general purpose fertilizer".

An NPK of 10-10-10 is twice is strong as a 5-5-5 fertilizer, so you just put half as much on (in broad terms :) )

But if the ratio of the N, P and K is not balanced then its no longer a general purpose fertilizer - so 10-0-0 would be all "N" with no "P" or "K" - Bloodmeal, Hoof & Horn and Urea are all "pure N", Bonemeal is nearly all "P" (although it contains some "N"). I can't think of anything organic that is "All K" - Comfrey might be the best one? it is high in K relative to its "N" and "P"

Growmore is an inorganic balanced Fertilizer with an NPK of 7-7-7 I think - I get mine from the local farmer and that is 16-16-16 so I have to be careful not to use my old "a generous handful" measure with that!

In general terms

N = Nitrogen = Leafy growth
P = Phosphorous = Roots
K = Potassium / Potash = Flowers and Fruits

Plants need trace elements as well.

For those in the Sheffield/North Derbyshire area:

New Leaf Garden Centre near Coal Aston (yesterday):

2 X 10kg tubs of Growmore £20 (£12.50 each bought separately.)

Also Vitax Q4 MP compost 60 litres @ 3 for £10. Hope it's good stuff because at that price it's cheaper than large growbags and I'll be using them for that purpose as well!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Was even cheaper than that today at one of our local Wyevale's. Mind you that was for gardening club members.
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

I went and joined a Lotty shop near by , as our site doesnt have one, and i paid 60p a kilo bag.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
