Straight compost is too rich for seedlings. You need to 'thin it out' with perlite or sand, as well as sift it to get rid of larger clumps.

Your homemade also needs to have cooked hot, to kill disease organisms. If it didn't, then spend the extra bit for store bought starting mix and save a lot of headaches.

Sieved leaf mould mixed with sharp sand makes a good seed compost and shouldn't have any weeds in it.

As a precaution you can sterilize it in shallow trays in the oven after cooking the Sunday roast!

Weed seeds are always a problem with home made compost.

A blitz in the microwave will do the same as the oven.

Never tried more than shallow trays at a time.
