Wallflowers
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:08 »
I have some wallflowers planted last autumn that I left in situ.  They were supressing weeds and I didn't have anything else to plant there.  They are looking very green and healthy, are they worth leaving in over the winter (ie will they flower again)?  They're just the bog-standard biennial variety.

Many thanks,
Rachael

If you have a small garden where you want every plant to count I'd have them out.  If you're not that fussed  then leave them, I've kept them going for several years but they become very leggy.

I've tried cutting them back but they seem to die if i do. So i think yes, they will flower next year but might be leggy.   :)

If you avoid cutting back into the woody stems they usually survive alright, but can get wiidy as Spana said.

I have some on their second year, but by the third I end up replacing them.

Lol, no its a very big garden with lots of bare bed space.  I can't justify filling it with garden-centre bought plants so am gradually putting in cuttings, plant divisions, seed grown and occasional bought specimen plants.  If they're going to flower then they are well worth keeping for another year.  They actually look better now than in their first year as they're now protected from the chickens!

Thanks all,
Rachael
