Sink herb garden
« on: May 17, 2011, 13:52 »
I've been lucky to obtain an old belfast type sink which I plan on making into a herb garden. Was going to add crocks to bottom compost and sharp sand. What are the best herbs to plant and where can I get good quality ones at low cost price?

Thanks in advance as advice on here is fantastic
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

I have one and put 4 lots of garden centre tyme in it. It is growing well and I have had a lot from it. I now fancy doing another for some other herbs.

I grow some of my herbs in a similar old sink - only it is oblong in shape. I just put a few crocks over the plug hole, fill it with normal compost and sow seeds direct in late April - for me up here. :) I usually stick to coriander and parsley or chives, all of which I always plant annually, in this particular container and grow my perennial herbs in the ground in a bed. You may find that you have a decent garden centre where you can buy young herb plants but they are mostly pretty easy to grow from seed. :)

I have just planted some lettuce (mixed leaves), radishes and spring onions up into mine - to save me from having to drive to the allotment each time we want a salad!

I hadn't thought of putting herbs in it - we have our herbs in individual pots (although this year I am only bothering with thyme, rosemary and mint as we didn't seem to use anything else last year).
I always find that work gets in the way of life.
