plants to plant in memory of a lost loved one?
« on: June 06, 2007, 21:40 »
hello, I have a query similar to another thread the other day.  My husbands cousin died at the weekend aged 29.  Unfortunately neither of us can make it back for the funeral (I have to have an amnio, same day of course).  My husbands aunt and uncle are very keen gardeners, and I had a thought that it might be nice to get them a plant to put in the garden, and if we could find something named Andy/Andrew it would be, hopefully, a nice gesture.  I'd appreciate any guidance on this, we are sorry we can't actually give the family any 'physical' support, at this time.

Only 29, eh. How tragic.

I searched google for andrewii and andrewsii so you might want to do the same to see what comes up.  There is a viburnum and this ...

G. andrewii (Andrews' Bottle Gentian)
Genus = Gentiana
Species = G. andrewii

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"...The Andrews' bottle gentian (Gentiana andrewsii), a New England native, bears deep indigo flowers which never open, and only a tough, determined pollinator like the bumblebee can force its way inside.  This species is perhaps the easiest of all the wild gentians to cultivate (it often thrives in sun or shade), and its rarity throughout New England and threatened status in Massachusetts should give it a special appeal to the conservation gardener..."

many thanks WG, you came up trumps for me again.  I have gone for the gentiana andrewsii and gentiana andrewsii alba.....took a while to find someone to buy the seeds from, found someone on ebay in the end.  I just hope they are successful, wouldn't want to add to the parents suffering.
Thankyou.

I feel honoured.

I am so impressed that you were able to find seeds.  I hope they grow for you.
