Flies over newly dug up ground
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:50 »
I did some more digging yesterday, and towards the evening I noticed loads of small flies hovering above the newly dug up ground. They were dark brown/black, and their wings when not flying are not spread apart like the house flies'. Any suggestions? What were they looking for, lol?

Trying organic gardening. Hoping to stick to it.

OMG! I sure hope not, Agapanthus! It was strange though. I was worrying more for my cabbages nearby. Is there a cabbage alternative for the carrot root fly? If not, then I'll cease worrying....

There is an equivalent in terms of damage but is a butterfly I believe, though its the caterpillars that do the damage.  I went away last year for 10 days.  left healthy and medium sized broc plants, came home to enormous plants completely smothered in caterpillars. like 100 or so per leaf, had to bin the lot before they spread any further, plus I couldn't be bothered to remove every one by hand.  This year I have small mesh net covering them!

BooHoo!

Boy, is gardening full of ups and downs! But I'm not giving up - no chance of that!

The cabbages look great at the moment, apart from those that have been munched on by slugs. Need to get collars on them ASAP though. Now, that might be abit of a challenge, but I wondered if a piece of foam/sponge would do? The kind used on furniture. It's at least 5 years old - we use pieces of it for dishes etc. Do you think there are traces of factory stuff in in to not use it? I've plenty of this, but none of the gardening variety.
