Companion planting:
« on: May 24, 2009, 10:28 »
I am trying to find a comprehensive list of companion planting.  I know Courgettes and Sweetcorn is one, but that is the only one I can find!

Not liking or knowing anyone that likes courgettes, it seem's pretty pointless in me growing them, so, is there any other well known companion planting that I can do?

You can plant your squash/pumpkin to ramble through the sweetcorn as long as you put the actual pumpkin roots a fair bit away from the corn roots.

Have a look here as well

Traditional combination, often referred to as the "Holy Trinity", is pumpkins and sweetcorn with climbing beans growing up the sweetcorn. Squashes and courgettes can of course be grown as well as pumpkins. Sunflowers can replace the sweetcorn or some of them to jolly up the plot.

When growing a combination it helps to give the plants all a little more space. A cane or stake against the sweetcorn helps to ensure that corn and bean all stay upright.

Surely the modern corn varieties are no where near as tall as the 'high as a elephant's eye' traditional ones.  Don't the beans quickly run out of places to climb?

Tomatoes with basil and marigolds amongst them and carrots with chives I understand are good ones.  I think the Henry Doubleday research foundation(I think that's what its called) do a booklet about companion planting.

No - it's not wrong, it's been update.

Many still refer to it as "HDRA", which many have at least heard of!

"..."Holy Trinity", is pumpkins and sweetcorn with climbing beans growing up the sweetcorn..."When they [the beans] reach the top nip them off."

Yes, but the modern sweet corn only grows to about five feet and climbing beans are only just getting going at that height.  If you have squashes sprawling around between them, how do you get in to pick the corn and beans?

By all means grow these crops fairly close together if you so wish but mixing them up is liable to lead to an uncontrollable jungle.

My daughter has put sweetcorn in between maincrop potatoes that are already earthed up. Growing away well, and I am going to do the same.
Saw this mentioned in an RHS book and seemed worth a try
