Reading an "organic vegetable growing book" from the library it seems to suggest that planting marigolds as companions to spuds and carrots and mint near carrots and onions is a good idea as the flies are repulsed by the said marigolds and mint
I know mint is a real pain to stop spreading so I would put it in pots ....but do they mean amongst the veg or just nearby????
If nothing else at least marigolds would look nice around the border of the beds?!?!?!?!?
You can take a horse to water....but a pencil must be lead!!
(No chemicals ......yet!)

Marigolds look nice anyway and last ages.
Nigella are good for something - cooking maybe - and attract helpful insects and they look good.
Poached Egg plants too - but mine were rubbish this year.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I've always put a few pots of Marigolds near my tomatoes in the greenhouse and have never had any problems with whitefly.  I also grow Basil in pots near the Toms so it might be the Basil, or both keeping them away.

There's always a bit of space around the edges of our (un-edged) beds, perfect for little frills of companion plants like munty says, and not taking up cropping space. I sow companions at the same time as the veg seeds, in the same set of trainers, so I don't forget. If you get a few veg plants failing, they are great to pop in to the spaces too :D
