How do you secure cloche?
« on: October 10, 2018, 20:01 »
Hi All,

Bit of an odd question, but I’m looking for suggestions as to what people use to secure their pipes that makes up the hoops for cloches.

At the moment I use a wooden dowel knocked into ground and then jam the pipe on to it.

Just wondering what other people are using.  I’m looking for something cheap.

I use 1/2 inch and 1 inch pipe.

Thanks.

I haven't used mine yet, but one of my neighbours does it as you do, the other criss-crosses  long pieces over the beds diagonally and just pushes them into the ground. The former seems much more effective!

Wooden dowels are a good way to go but will quickly rot. Anything plastic (doesn't have to be round or solid) that you can jam up into the hose will last, and you will be able to push them deeper into the ground without breaking them to make things more secure wind-wise. You could even stick the ends of the cloche pegs into some of the tubing and fill it with expanding foam to make it rigid.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

The way i secure cloche bands, take plastic drainage tubing 32/40mm cut to length 30-45cms, push into the ground as for as you can and remove a plug of soil, re-insert the tube and push your cloche band into it to the required depth.

Exactly what i'd suggest.
