Agree slugs and snails is a possibility but in this weather I would also put mice on the list of suspects as they are probably looking for something juicy to nibble on as there's not much water around.

I cut one of mine open when I saw this and there was an earwig inside but I don't know if it was the culprit or just taking advantage
