last of last years produce
« on: May 04, 2018, 22:36 »
Lifted the last of the leeks today. Still have a few stored onions left but most are now soft and sprouty. This is the first time in all my years of growing that I've managed to get onions to keep till May. Usually they are mostly soft or mouldy by the end of March. And don't believe people when they say onions grown from sets don't keep well.  ;)

I think it depends on what variety rather than sets or seeds but most importantly on how well dried and stored they are. It's really humid here which makes storing onions hard but shallots are pretty easy. We ate the last of them tonight as it happens.

We used the last of our leeks last week and still have a few onions left in the shed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Harvested the last 2 winter caulis yesterday. Still growing is the PSB (although it is past it's best and I'm now going to leave it to flower for a while for the bees), spring cabbage, a few spring onions and some chard. In storage I've got a few onions, shallots, potatoes, the last leeks that were harvested early this week and half a Crown Prince squash - although that is going to be roasted later this evening.

Last year's parsley and PSB still going strong
My onions ran out a month ago and have been raiding Lidl. The shallots would have lasted, but I planted out the last batch for this year's crop. Potatoes did well, as did some stored beetroot carrots and dried beans. Very happy. Not quite so pleased at how this year is going, but I'm catching up. I'll have a polytunnel by the Autumn so I expect to have a much wider selection next Winter.

Last of the onions, marrow eaten in the last few days.  Last of the corn and mangetouts from the freezer gone. We'll finish the apples today.  In store just a few squash and in the peat filled box we call a clamp I think there are a couple of parsnip and some beets left.  Oh and a half sack of charlottes and a full sack of kestrals left.  Should just see us through to the PJs coming in .... or near enough!

The freezer has plenty of beans and fruit left .... thankfully ... or I might have to buy veggies.     ::)

My potatoes didn’t get us to Christmas last year☹️ So I’ve planted more this year, will probably have a bumper crop lol. Apart from soft fruit in the freezer & jams & chutney , oh parsnips harvested February are in the freezer, I think everything’s gone
What are mangetout like from the freezer? Never considered freezing them

almost used all the stored potatoes

Thought we were just talking about in the ground.
If its stored then, have plenty maincrop potatoes stored that will last for another month or so.
Then it is hit the first and second earlies and the semi-maincrop duke of york till the real maincrop is ready again.

Freezer sweetcorn, peas and mangetout are getting close to being finished.
Plenty of tomato paste to keep us going till August for a new batch.
Still have two jars of beetroot and homegrown cucumber and bean piccalilli to finish off.

I still have quite a few shallots that seem absolutely perfect - Longor seem to keep very well for me.  I also have some garlic left and 1 Thelma Sanders sweet potato acorn squash.

There is still some stuff in the freezer.

I only have onions left about 10,will use them with some very nice pigs liver yum that's a meal that's full of goodness and flavour.
Won't use all of them in that 1 meal, they will go in a special fried rice.
Best of all i don't do the cooking  eat and enjoy.
