sweet toms
« on: February 18, 2018, 15:27 »
there seems to be quite a lot said about growing tomatoes from seed and like most we to grow our own perhaps not as early as some of you but nevertheless we eventually get a useful crop possibly later than some

so my Q. although we get good size toms and plenty of small varieties to boot I'm not convinced how I can get a real sweet tasting tom and I mean a real sweet taste I know some recommend a dose of Epsom salts in the later stages of growing ? but how would you achieve a real sweet tom may be using  sugar water occasionally perhaps

has anyone any idea's how one mite get a proper sweet tasting tomato grew  from seed from any tomato apart from the supposedly sweet tasting varieties available

I don't know about sweetness, it tends to vary greatly, and often it is down to personal taste.  My husband likes a very sweet tomato, but I prefer one that also has a bit of a bite to it.  I do find, though, that if the tomato plants are kept only just damp enough to thrive, the tomatoes are a lot more intense in flavour.

Watering with a sugar solution is a bad idea. If you remember osmosis from schooldays, the action is from the weaker to the stronger solution. So feeding with something that's a stronger solution than that in the plant will actually suck moisture out of it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You can only grow different varieties until you find one that is to your taste.
Rosada seems to have the highest Brix rating, but If I remember rightly it is difficult to get seeds for it lately
