Red cabbage advice

For the last couple of years I've grown a red and green cabbage mix but the reds were well past their best before the holiday season

So I need recommendations for a good variety to grow this year, please, as I do like some braised red cabbage and apple with my roast pork/ham on Boxing day

I always grow Red Drumhead for pickling just before the seasonal period.

I find red cabbage doesn't really last much past Nov/December either, but Red Drumhead does hold better than most.

Once braised, it freezes really well, so I have a big cooking session when they are ready and stash the results. You would never know the difference once it is re-heated

My vote goes to Rouge Tete Noir, available from Real Seeds. It is sold as a late summer / early autumn variety, but I have found that it stands quite well. It is very easy to grow and gets quite big.

I have frozen it in the past, but was trying to avoid doing so, as that's just when the freezer is fit to bursting with harvested veg and all the early holiday stuff

I''ve been sorting out my tin and the variety is in fact "Lodero". I've cut another this morning for pickling which is still in good condition.

I grew Lodero last year and they stood well into the winter without bursting. There's only two of us so I didn't grow a lot, and we finished them about a month ago. I think I will grow a few more this year. Taste was good, pickled some and braised some. What I will try this year is fermenting them i.e. sauerkraut. My son pursueded me to try this in January, with white ball headed cabbage, and I'm now getting into it. Apparently this is the only way of storing veg long term which actually adds to the nutritional value rather than reducing it - its all to do with probiotics. Mmm Danone and all that!

Late maturing Roderick F1 from Dobies. Sown in March last year, had them all Winter and. Still 2 more left in the ground. They stand really really well when mature and are happy with freezing nights, about the same as my brilliant Maximus brussels, right through until now. I know we can't save the seeds from these F1s but they really are worth it for certain crops. They also keep really well when cut and left in the fridge, red cabbage seem to like that twilight existence.

I have Lodero too, and there are still three in good condition on the plot... good braised with apple and spices, and I am going to grow them again this year.

Club root resistant too
