I'm still buying Jack's Magic for starting seeds, but it's not the cheapest around.

Same here, although I add a third of coir and a third of vermiculite to the sowing mix.

Fantastic stuff for potting on too, that Jack's Magic

Just checked on the internet and our local Wickes is selling the Jack's Magic. After your comments I think I will give it a try. What could possibly go wrong?

we used clover multi purpose compost this year and found it the best compost we have ever used for both price and quality looking at our garden log we bought 30 bags for seed and potting on some mixed with vermiculite some with perlite had no probs

I'm just a bit concerned that our supplier is changing brands this season but they have said if the new brand doesn't meet the expectation then they will go back with clover 3 75ltr bags £12.00 couldn't fault it its a no brainer  :D :D :D

A mixed day. Checked on the internet that our local Wickes had Jack's Magic in stock - 14 bags left. Drove to pick one or two up to find that they didn't have any! However, they were selling off seed and potting compost - Westland Grow Sure 30 litre bags for £1 each, so bought half a dozen of them. Anyone had any experience of Grow Sure?

Do you mean Gro Sure seed and cutting compost. Not heard of seed and potting.
My next door neighbour uses that for a lot of flower and root cuttings he does.
It contains Vermiculite, so is more for flowers and cuttings than vegetable seeds.
He praises it though and has been using it for years.

Another vote for Clover which I get from a local independent garden centre at a very good price.  They do Jack's Magic too,but more expensive.  I worry that it is peat based, but round here I can't easily source recommended non peat alternatives at reasonable cost.  We do produce our own, but it is never enough for our needs.

I got a 60 litre bag of J Arthur Bowers multi purpose from Homebase for £3.98. Put my first summer cabbage seeds in it on Monday 5th Feb, they are sprouting through already!

buying compost
have you bought your compost yet if so have you found its gone up in price I've been shopping around for our compost where we where buying 75 ltr bags for so much its been reduced to 50 or 60 ltr bags same price

and then there's the best buy compost something that's actually compost and not dregs of sticks and all sorts of material I don't mind paying that bit extra if its good compost I don't buy any peat free compost at all

have you found a good quality compost that you would recommend to a friend  ;)

I'm still using Jack's for all my seed sowing and Wicke's Multi purpose, on buy 4 for 3 offer atm for potting on. It is a bit courser than the JM but still peat-based - works for me  ;)
