In truth I've been in two minds this year about running the compy, but seeing as the question as to what is happening has been asked, I'll give it another go.
I'm using the same rules as last year and it's no use having a wobbly afterwards if you've not adhered to them. Read them before entering!
Apologies for it being late, hopefully quite a few will have sown the seeds as a matter of course, but it's not too late anyway.
I'll copy/paste the rules from previous years which seem to have been OK, but with a slight amendment regarding declaring height........
The winner will be the tallest sunflower rather than the widest head.
There will also be a poll at the end for the best photo.
At present, the only prize is kudos, you can have your profile amended to show that you "done good"!
The rules.....
Newbies can register but must have 50 posts before end of competition.
Names have to be registered by 30th June to count.
Please post pictures showing the measurement, with full length photo, by 31st October, when the competition will end.
New - If you have difficulty posting a photo showing both the tape measure and plant, due to the height of the sunflower and the lack of 2 pairs of arms, please post a photo of the flower alongside an object to compare the height with (this could be yourself!). The precise height must have been measured, not guessed - how you do it is up to you! Please be honest in your declaration.
Anyone who disagrees with Moderators will be disqualified.
Please post on this thread only to register or comment on your progress. Asking for advice is acceptable, but bear in mind those giving it are trying to beat you! Waffling posts will be deleted!
Right - who's first in to bat?

Hi D.D, I'd also like to join! Me and my other half actually started having our own competition at home so it'll be fun to enter this one. I will do my best to get 50 posts by the end of Oct - I don't have a huge amount of knowledge about gardening/allotmenteering but hopefully I can join in with some of the chat :)
-
Hmmmm. My tallest variety has just flowered at 4ft tall   so I guess I'll just have to aim for "prettiest" now...
-
Slugs have decimated my attempts. :(
My last contender had got to about 2 foot - I then managed to whack it with a shed door I was manoeuvring down the garden path.
>:(
Naturally it has taken umbrage and over the course of the last two days has now keeled over.
... and don't get me started on my pumpkins.
Pip pip,

Oh no! Is it too late to start again? Mine is probably only about 4 inches long currently.. so don't think I'll be winning any prizes this year!! :tongue2:
-
The sunflower is about 5ft and looking very sorry for itself. Not very good.
-
A reminder - after today, you have only 6 days for any submissions!
-
I'm out, winds snapped the stems ages ago :(
-
I forgot to take a photo of mine in flower
-
MIne never reached more that 6 ft high, big fat heads though and leaves like dinner plates.
-
Hmm.. I signed up for the sunflower and pumpkin comps. The 'Lardman' effect kicked in for both... :(

I definitely didn't manage to grow any really tall sunflowers this year. However, I did grow some I really liked. This one was my favourite and funnily enough wasn't one of the ones I grew on purpose - it just sprang up and looks like one I grew 2 years ago.
-
Sorry, no entry from me :(
Out of the 16 seeds I planted, only 2 survived to about 5ft, the rest were eaten by either the slugs or rabbit.
Oh well, there's always next year....
-
Whilst I did forget to take a picture of the tallest I grew whilst in flower I did snap this one for the prettiest

And here are some of the heads that made lovely cut flowers

The 'Lardman' effect kicked in for both... :(
 I have an effect now ? or do you mean everything you put in the soil died
-
Mine did manage to grow to 9' 2" but over a weekend in August
it just died !! why I do not know. Better luck next year
-
I only got one that grew to about 8 ft but it keeled over and died before I could get a photo or measure it properly.
-
As you were in two minds whether or not to run last year, I take it it's not on this year? I had a lot of illness last year so wasn't around much to take an interest...this year I have some promising looking sunflower plants though! :D
