A large cloche is a great idea as sweet potatoes need lots of heat.

I was thinking of growing them with one of those water dispenser bottles over the top as these are quite a good size. Would this be suitable?

They are a good size but check before you use them - they usually have a deposit attached to them to prevent people just acquiring them
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Depends on the potato. Just be patient, one day soon you'll find the first nubbins on top. Shouldn't be long now.

Mine have been in water for over two weeks and no sign of roots let alone shoots. I'm sure I have them the right way up too. Any suggestions? Try a different potato perhaps?

Thanks in advance.

I received the Mr Fothergill's catalogue today and notice they are selling 10 slips for £10.95. So it seems you can save a fair amount by growing your own.
Acquired a third of a plot in January 2011 which was extended to three quarters in December 2011. Managed by myself and my 6 year old son.

They'll root only when they're ready. Nothing will speed them up. Mine from last year took 2 months to start its first roots, which is why I suggest people start them now to be ready for planting time. Its possible the potato was sprayed with a sprouting deterrent and simply needs more time.

If you're still worried, it doesn't hurt to purchase another potato from a different place and start it as well.

Thanks Trillium. May buy another potato elsewhere and keep the ones I have going on anyway to see if they take.  Will keep you posted!  :)

Mine seem to have a taken a turn for the worse - one of my potatoes has definately developed a very small patch of mould, under the water level.

Is this normal?
