rat poison
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:43 »
i recently moved my hens as the whole allotments had a very serious rat infestation. the council baited all the runs and my shed with poison. this has now been sorted and all the rats dead. i thought i had cleared all the poison that was left, but, i have just seen some small empty bags which i had forgotten about, with a few crumbs of poison in them. the amounts that would have been left were tiny. will the  birds have eaten any, will it affect them and should i stop selling the eggs to friends (i sell them as its the only way i can pay for the feed). can anyone please help? thanks

I'm guessing that if they see it, they'll eat it.  ::)

A very small quantity (a couple of grains) would probably not do much damage but keep a careful eye on them for obvious signs.

You've definitely cleared all remaining poison out, I take it?

As far as the eggs, hmmm... tough call that one. Probably ok, but I'd certainly think twice for a week or so.

I'd be interested to hear other thoughts...

hi thanks for replying. i picked up all remaining poison and stored it a glass jar. and some crumbs  and empty bags i brushed into a waste  bag which i thought i had disposed of. when i let let them out today i saw that bag by the side of the run which i  missed which they had been rooting in. its only a few crumbs but what is the implication for the eggs?

I know this is not a 'chicken related' answer but the first thing the vet asked me when I took my ill Boxer dog to him was 'could he have had access to rat poison?'  Keep a very sharp eye out for any 'off colour' behaviour, lethargy etc.
