I recently saw a video with a greens area in the coop run where the person laid 2x4's on the 4" side so they'd sit higher, and used a chain link fencing over the lumber which put the access up a bit higher. The chickens could graze but not get quite so close to the roots or soil.

That's a great idea for a run.  We free range and it worked perfectly until this year.  I'll just have to give it recovery time and protect the lawn in the winter.

A hint of green in begininng to show now - it's moss!!!!!

The wife and I have been kicking around the idea of growing fodder for all of our critters to supplement with. basically sprouted grains such as Wheat or Oats, 50 pounds become 300 and the nutrient levels go up too. With horses 1% of their body weight is fed daily but they must have access to hay for dry matter. Chickens and hogs can be fed almost 100% as long as supplemental minerals and vitamins are used.

The thing that I would be concerned about with chickens is getting crop bound from the long stems. I guess it could be chopped up or ran through a food processor.

Quote from a landscape gardener: £400...   2 bags topsoil + turf: £45.  Fun and easy to do. Looking very green and vibrant two weeks on and outgrowing chicken grazing....

Can't see my grass for the cherry tree blossom that's blown down, it looks like an over enthusiastic wedding has taken place, luckily the girls like the blossom and are helping clear it up, (probably so they can get to the grass again).
