Is it a good idea to grow Tomatoes near Potatoes?

My plot neighbour says to grow them as far apart as possible due to potential blight issues. My plan for next year had them in the same bed but he said that blight can pass between them even though the actual specific disease is different or something. He has 2 plots and grows toms on one, pots on the other every time. For me, I've simply switched to an 8 year rotation and separated them that way.

Tomatoes and potatoes are in the same family of veg and both get so-called 'potato' or late blight.
tbh though, as blight arrives in the air, I don't think separating them would make any difference, unless the planting areas/plots  had miles between them...
Here, once it arrives then all the potatoes and tomatoes on site get it 
There are some varieties of toms and potatoes that are somewhat resistant though, whether they suit your taste is a different matter, though

As mumofstig says, if Blight is in your area then you will get it. The best protection for your Tomatoes is to grow them in a greenhouse. In 50 years of owning a greenhouse I have only had Blight on my Tomatoes once. Wish I could say the same about my spuds.
