Title: Yet another newbee
Post by: Veg Plot 1B on February 23, 2018, 17:09
Hello

As of 18 months ago I had never had an interest in crowing veg or plants for that matter, any suggestion I would get an allotment would be laughed off.

How did I get here? Attended a lecture at local gardening club on how to grow veg using pots. Subscribed to monthly mag, did some research & came across square foot gardening. Created 3 raised beds and grew lots of different veg onions, garlic, tomatoes, peas (which never got indoors for eating),runner beans, chillies, peppers and salad amongst others. Hey I can do this!

Saw an advert for a great deal on a second hand 10 x 6 greenhouse which is now at bottom of my garden. What a pleasure to have own grown salad over Christmas.

After planting broccoli in raised beds I found I did not have enough space so went and got an allotment plot.

Took over a well looked after plot with mini orchard 6 tree + current bushes, strawberry bed, fruit cage & small shed last October.

I have taken on Charles Dowding way and will be following it. So far I  have added 3off 12ft x 4ft 1 off 12ft x 3ft raised beds using scaffolding boards. All have been filled with manure & compost and been left covered up over the winter. I intend to add another 1 off 12ft x 3ft & 3 off 8ft x4 ft raised beds.

I have 2 compost bins (dalek type) on the go.

A few weeks ago another plot holder said there was an abundance of seed weed on the beach, so off we went and came back with 3 builders’ bags full.

Welcome to the site and forum Colin  :)

Sounds as if you have a plan and know what you are doing - for now at least. The plot sounds nice.

Great to hear your enthusiasm. Hope you enjoy your time on the plot; you never know, some peas might make it to the kitchen this year 😁

Here is an update with some pictures of the orchard, veg beds, frame & tatty end (don’t look).

Only planted spuds so far but the green house is full to busting with young plants.
