I'd suggest a minimum of two posts: litter worms (composting) and earth worms

I am new to composting and have a large dalek type thingy....now just over half full...when I took lid off last week to put stuff in it was heaving with dark red worms...smaller than earth worms....few days later went to put stuff in again not a worm in sight...SO....do they just come to the surface now and then? I have never stirred this compost...should I? thanks

They will stay and move to a part where conditions are right for them. Don't worry!

But you might like to turn and aerate your compost at some stage, though if it's not mushy slushy, you can get away without.
