I got worms!!
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:37 »
I bought some worms from my local tackle shop to start my compost bin off. I bought lugworms and dendras.
Does anyone know which are better for making compost and if they will live together happily?

I think they use tiger worms in wormeries, won't they escape if they are only in a compost bin?  or is it a solid one?

Brandlings are the ones you want. Lugworms are dug from the shore, and will die in the compost heap.

Dendra worms are good composters, like brandlings. But do you really mean lugworms, the sort used for sea fishing? :o

Are you going to use em in your garden compost bin or on a worm farm setup?

Dendra works fine for me. There s no need to mix em as they don t really cross breed, the fastest breeder is going to take over the other.

I have both Dendras and lugworms. As the lugworms were in a tub of compost when I bought them, I assumed thats what they would normaly live in. My compost bin is solid so no chance of escapees. My thinking was that as the lugworms are bigger, they would eat more and so compost faster.

lobworms it most definitely is lol  :D

lugworms are a (sea) worm used for beach fishing and rarely get sent inland alive! (they're gutted - and i dont mean cos they've been taken out of the sea)

and they wouldn't live in compost believe me lol

Our garden compost bin (dalek) is on concrete so when we started it about 5 years ago we dropped in a half dozen earthworms.
There are millions now!!
And the compost gets made in no time!
And my son uses them for fishing.

I'd call lobworms regular earthworms so they'd live in the soil.

Dendras are the ones commonly sold in tackle shops, but you can't beat a nice, juicy lobbie.
