comfrey question
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:14 »
I know that ornamental comfrey comes in two types, a tap rooted form and a fibrous rooted form and I am wondering what sort Bocking 14 is?

Apparently the fibrous rooted ones are easier to control, and I know from experience that the tap rooted one is a bu**** to get rid of!  ::)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I'm not 100% positive on this but I think Bocking 14 is the tap root variety, theses seem to be more the manure type for their ability to draw nutrients up from deep down.

I've got Russian and that never seems to self set

Just found this pdf which suggests it's deep rooted

Bocking 14 is the one that does not spread, it stays put where you plant it, it will thicken up into large leaf plants and give about four cuts a year.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Ooh I just did a search on Russian comfrey and it seems that Bocking 14 is a cultivar of it, not symphytum officinale which I had assumed it to be!
That's a nice link too Richy, thanks. :)

Ooh actually it sems to be extracts from John's article here. I can't see any acknowledgement of his copyright either!
