Title: Rape straw
Post by: rowbow on March 15, 2018, 12:45
Is anyone using oilseed rape straw for nesting or bedding? the revues are very good, the bit I like is that it composts down within 6 months.  :)

I have been rereading my chicken manual today which says rapeseed is poisonous to chickens. So I would be inclined to stsy away from rape straw.

Thay are referring to the seed, which I agree with but the straw has dust extracted crushed and cut, I doubt if any seed would get through, read the revues from stables on the benefits.

Might it be a bit coarse for chucks?  :)

It's crushed, so is finer than straw  :)

It may not be relevant if crushed but is a wide hollow stem giving good hiding to red mite  :)
