Broad bean HELP!!
« on: February 28, 2008, 16:55 »
My broad beans (The Sutton a dwarf I think) are now happily in the ground and about 2 - 3 inches high. I've not grown them before so am now stuck.
I know they are a dwarf variety but still want to provide some support.
I've googled for help but can't picture the 'support' being described.

I've planted 2 double rows with about 8 to 10 inches between each plant. Any advice would be great, pictures even better.

they only grow 12" high so won't need any support will they?   I suppose you could do the same as for peas and use twiggy sticks. The sticks get covered in foliage in a short time so don't look unsightly

2 posts and stretch some wire right down the row,i would tie them up as when they start to get the pods on them they can flop over without any wind
feed the soil not the plants

I dunno. 50p for sweeties should cover it as they are only little.

Failing that, cut some twigs from the hedgerow and stick them in where appropriate. I'm with the leave em be crowd. I grow aquadulce and they mostly stand up straight but of course there is always one sloucher in every line.
