Fruit bushes nets - not urgent
« on: September 20, 2018, 11:54 »
Where is a good place to buy this from and what price should it be?
Any tips on a) putting it on round some bushes together and b) one standard?
Do I just put it on a few weeks before harvest and take it off afterwards?
Also how do I stop birds from getting trapped?

Not sure which is the best or where to buy it from but get a good make that will last. I'd create a wooden cage for your bushes, either one big one for them all or individual ones, and do the same for the standard but obviously a bit higher. Make sure there's enough space between the branches so they don't snag the netting as they grow. Use those "U"-shaped metal staples to attach the net and leave about a foot at the bottom of the frame to weight it down with something so birds can't get in, or put a horizontal wooden bar at the bottom and secure the net to that as well. A cunning plan would be to design it so it can be easily dismantled once fruiting is over, or make one side like a door so you can get in to prune, weed, harvest etc. There are metal ones you can buy but they don't come cheap!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

If you can construct it so you can leave the sides netted & just take the top net off so it doesn’t get damaged by snow. I had mine from gardening naturally, not cheap but I’m expecting it to last, it’s going into its 3rd winter. I threaded galvanised wire around the bottom & then pegged that down. We altered a 6x 12mtr old gazebo for it & that’s in its 3rd year too. We used an old tent frame for a brassica cage too at about the same time if that helps
