Spring bulbs
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:26 »
Hi i am diging up about 1 foot of grass in a strip along side a paving path and am putting small box hedge in with a thin top layer of 4mm gravel, would i be able to plant some spring bulbs along each side of the hedge under the gravel? would they come through or is gravel to heavy? Any advice would be great, thanks

We have residual bluebells all over our property from when it was inhabited before it was abandoned over 30 years before we took it on. All round the house we put down that geotextile barrier fabric then gravel and the bluebells still manage to come up through that lot every year.

Bulbs are pretty strong and determined.

I agree with argyllie, after i dug up my uncles front garden to cover it with pebbles and slate, we covered it with B&Q's heavy duty weed blocker and yet they still come through ::)

So yes, go for it :D

When I go to our local dump (tip), you'll see flowering bulbs all over the place and these are buried under layers of soil and trash. Determined puts it mildly.
