Potatoes
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:25 »
How long can i leave potatoes in the ground?

I dug up my first lot of earlies last week and there were 29 pots from 1 tuber!!!

Well I was only expecting 6-10 if I was lucky -  I have another 40 odd tubers (earlies and maincrop) in the ground! I was expecting to dig up 4-5 (original) tubers a week (i.e. 35-40 new potatoes) but if the rest are like this I may have to leave some in the ground a bit longer - or am I better off lifting them all and storing them?

If the foilage is dying off, they can be lifted and stored, although generally not for as long as maincrop.

I don't like leaving spuds in the ground for longer than needed as I end up giving slugs more free meals!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they are big enough get them out and store them.  Just make sure you use them first, earlies don't keep as well as main crop.

Dig them up on a sunny morning and leave them out for a couple of hours for the skins to harden. Then put them in a sack and store somewhere cool and dark.

If you want to lift them I would cut the tops off and wait a couple of weeks before lifting, even if the tops are starting to die back
