clearing wine
« on: June 11, 2007, 19:24 »
I made a couple of gallons of rhubarb wine about two months ago.  I have racked twice and the top third is clearing.  Do I have to wait until the whole demijohn is clear or can I bottle and let them clear in the bottle.

Can anyone help?

If it is cloudy when you bottle, you will have a yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottle.   If you don't mind this then go for it.

Wine matures better in bulk, so after final racking it's best left in the demijon to mature before bottling.

Tell me David., can wine pick up an off-flavour if there is a yeast sediment in the bottle?

I find the best way to clear wine is to firstly pour it into a glass. Then raise it to your lips, tilt head & glass back and let glass empty into throat whilst executing a swallowing motion.

The same principle works for clearing up whisky, beer.......

I'm going now.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Wellies I would leave in demijohn while wine clears, try putting demijohn in a really cool place as this helps clearing. When completley clear either bottle or store in another demijohn and instead of airlock use a safety bung.
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.
