Garlic arrived... plant now or wait?
« on: January 15, 2019, 17:26 »
My 1st seed order through the allotment shop as arrived I hear (yay!) among which are 2 bulbs of Mersley wight, a winter-hardy softneck garlic.

The garlic I planted in September is looking good; rooted and shooted with long leaves, but I won't be able to get to the plot until Saturday to plant this lot, by which time very cold weather is forecast.

Should I plant the garlic in what looks like could be frosty ground (maybe snow who knows) or store them til the weather improves?

If planted will they just hang about until it gets warmer or rot in the ground?

Given the potentially bad weather incoming I think I'd plant them into pots to get them started and then transfer them out once the cold snap has passed.

I'd pop into a seed tray/pot to get some roots going - that's what I do with my onion sets.

Garlic will be happy in the soil but not subjected to the cold snap on its way.

Thanks guys, I'll put them in pots then for now.

Ok left in the shed or better being 'proper' indoors?

I'd put them in the shed for a bit of protection, for now. Once they have shoots, they'll have to go outside though.

...even if its still freezing? I ask because the Sep planted ones were showing green shoots within 2wks. The shed does have windows but not the brightest of light...

As it is much colder now, even inside the shed, I think they will slower to come through, than they were in September.
