On vets charges I'm looking at another big set of bills  :(  My Thorsy (in my avatar), who already has the digestive problems, has been having breathing difficulties and the vet thinks bronchial and possible asthma. Had to take him to the emergency vets just, but they now have normal pricings on Sunday day instead of the £100 fee - phew! Thank gawd for that pet insurance  ::) I was meant to keep him in, before I could even shut the cat basket back up he was out of the house and is sat on a neighbours shed looking at me thumbing his lovely little nose

I had a long chat with my pal the vet about charges and wages. His feeling is that they're underpaid (he views doctors as overpaid one species specialists) but even so, when you look at the cost of equipment and premises etc, theatre time is very expensive.

I wouldn't argue that they are well worth it for their expertise and the time they take to train has to be considered. They are after all professionals. What upsets me is the "let's push this product" attitude. i.e. special diets or expensive joint aids. Seemed to me, whenever I went to my vet, I'd sit in the waiting room and be astounded at the money going over the counter for repeat scrips of the same thing. Dogs didn't used to have to have special diets, so why is that the answer to every ailment now...........something dreadfully wrong somewhere  :(
I used to do the daily dog walk with the same people for years. One by one it seemed that the local vet prescribed their dogs diet food, and a disproportionate (sp?) amount of them them were prescribed it for pancreatitis! I was with my vet for 25 years but towards the end I lost all confidence  regarding general ailments; of course trauma and therefore that expensive theatre time is a completely different kettle of fish

It's like any professional, we can only do our best to judge how good they are and impartial. I was told of one vet who had a great manner with the owners but wasn't actually very good. Owners loved him, as he doled out sympathy.

Like bookies I have never seen a vet struggling for money. Having said that I have insurance on my 2 dogs. Lifelong cover and it costs about £44 a month. Excess is £60. Not claims yet but If I do it will be worth it because some treatments can cost thousands and I value my dogs beyong money.
I expect a very high standard for my money and at present am somewhat dissatisfied with my vet. She cannot examine my bitch who hates her. Not good with large dogs apparently so the gossip goes.

Now retired from the day job and working hard on my smallholding.

I've used baby calpol to bring Thorsy's temperature down before. Works really well, adn it was a vet who suggested it to me so I doubt it causes any harm.

Just for anybody reading this - never give a cat aspirin.

Child's calpol contains paracetamol although different versions on the market now contain different active ingredients), and again should really only be used if a vet states it is okay for your pet to have it. Mine advised it for Thor's spiking temperature (he suffers from this regularly when his gastric problems arise), but for some breeds and ages it can be lethal.

I have enough trouble getting Calpol down my 4 year old.... I wouldn't be brave enough to try and get a cat to take it too!    :D

PS.. Thorsy is a very pretty cat... and I bet he knows it!
My Mac is a looker and he certainly makes the most of it  :D

Hugs to you and Thorsy - I hope he is feeling better soon

Snappy

No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can ever totally remove his fur from your couch.

I could give up chocolate but I'm not a quitter.

He does have a stripey tail along with tabby patches on his sides and top of his head. When he was a kitten he was semi-longhaired, but grew out of it (for which I am grateful as he leaves a big white fur patch where he sleeps as it is). At the vets yesterday they asked if he was more sedate than usual, he's the only cat that it is really hard to answer that with as he never moves off the bed despite being only 18months old, he's not even a big play cat, just loves his sleep and cuddles!

Thor has had be kitty hospitalised. He is really having trouble breathing now. Waiting on news  :(
