Garlic varieties autumn planting
« on: October 12, 2017, 18:13 »
Just pressed pay on 4 bulbs of Provence WIght. I  did Lyubasha and Picardy Wight last year, LYubasha did not do well, Picardy Wight was small.  What do other allotmenteers like to grow?

Just potted 120 cloves of Music in the shed, they go into the garden March-April.

Iberian white always does well for me, but not Solent White.
I guess it depends on your soil and area conditions. Stick with what works well for you.

Don't believe in faffing. I only plant mine once. They are already in the ground and there they will stay until harvest. They need the spells of cold (if we get any) in order to clove. Garlic does not need molly-coddling!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Interesting DD. I thought that a good thick bulb depended on a fairly warm spring. Hence the splendid bulbs you see in the south of France.

Elephant garlic is not true garlic and is related to the leek.

What you're growing is a softneck variety, which is more suited to warmer climes. What chumpy7 is growing is a hardneck variety, which needs a period of 1-2 months at a low temperature in order to divide into cloves.

Even I have to order mine online this year as we can only get to the Garlic Farm if we go all round the houses as the bridge just before it at Newchurch has been deemed unsafe and the road shut.   :nowink:

Optimism probably a gardeners best tool.

Online prices for seed garlic seem to be about 4 times higher than a supermarket bulb, so this year I'm experimenting with a supermarket variety.

Good luck, but a few things to bear in mind -
Is it worth the risk of bringing onion white rot onto your plot, to save a few pounds?
Are you are expecting varieties grown in Spain and China to grow as well in our climate?

Rather than look on-line - they are usually less expensive in your local garden centre..

Absolutely. Just like using potatoes from the supermarket. To save a few pennies, people seem willing to take a lot of risks.
