Title: turkey was off, the ending.
Post by: LILLILEAF on December 26, 2017, 09:12
We picked up our fresh turkey on saturday,a nice 14lbs,cost £26.00,we don't usually spend that much on a dinner but as it was Christmas we did.
The turkey went in the fridge as soon as we got home.
We got the bird out chrstmas morning took it out of its bag and boy did it smell awfull off it was,so we decided to cook it anyway, when it was cooked we tasted the small bit,it seemed ok,but we did not want it so the animals can have it dogs and the cat.
I cannot say how disappointed we were :(my question is can i claim my money back? or just put it down to very back luck.
So we shall be having egg and chips nice fresh eggs from our own hens, now i know they are fresh.

If it was wrapped in plastic shrink-wrap it may well have smelt horrible when you took it out, but it would be unlikely to be "off". Ours was the same but I wiped it down, put lots of aromatic herbs in and around it, including sliced satsumas and it was pretty good, and smelt fine when it was cooking We have never bought a supermarket-chilled bird like this before but were suddenly "hosting" Christmas Dinner and it seemed the best option

I can see why you might have been unsure about eating it... we put the wrapper in the outside bin, well wrapped up, to get it out of the kitchen pronto

If you have the bar code from the wrapper, it would be worth while taking the mater further as that smell is truly repulsive

The first time I ever cooked a turkey I took the wrapper off and got the same sort of smell. I rang my mum and she told me not to worry as she's always found the same. Give it a wipe then carry on as normal.

It’s a natural smell from it being bagged up, sometimes fresh, well hung meat has a sweet smell(as does blood). It will be fine I wouldn’t waste it on your animals

The turkey was a fresh bought one wrapped in a plastic bag,the bag was not bad,but the smell was on the turkey in the cavity and the end of the drumsticks,we did wash it well, sadly the smell was still there not nice at all, after that both of us were not looking forward to our dinner.
We shall be having a simple supper to night egg and chips, the spuds are grown by us and the eggs are from my hens :).

I'd discuss it with the shop where you bought it but don't go in all guns blazing - depends if you use them often I suppose. Anyway, see what they say.

You should have given us a shout - Cara cooked Christmas dinner but seems to have planned on catering for the entire village! We didn't use half of the bird between 4 adults, 1 child carnivore and 4 moggies :)

Anyway hope you had good time so far despite that problem

You should check out the news pages Lillileaf, there are lots of complaints about turkeys that have gone off from one particular well known supermarket.

Then go and complain

ITV Link to Tesco Chickens (http://www.itv.com/news/search/?q=Tesco+Christmas+Turkey)

Not very confident with attaching links but I hope this has worked!

EDIT
The link was posted correctly but the forum software 'corrected' the lower case C in Christmas in the link so it didn't work. I've worked round it - John

Amazingly - last year Tesco turkeys were not what you might expect either (unless you like your meat green!!!)

With all the issues Tesco keep having with their food quality, I still can't understand how they're our country's largest retailer.

They are the easiest supermarket for me to get to, and their delivery service is useful for heavy stuff - as I have no car. I feel their tinned and packaged stuff is the same quality as everybody else's, luckily I just try to avoid their meat/poultry  ::)

The turkey we bought was not from a super market,we bought it from a large butchers shop,we had a turkey from there last year it was excellent.
But they do not rear them they just buy them in,according to there order book, and looking at the very lagre sheet they had of orders on the wall there was plenty of them,i know they may not all be turkey's.
I shall call in tomorrow with all my paper work in hand and the bar code label off the smelly packaging, this is in a sealed bad so no germs can get out, will see what they have to say on the matter!.Lillileaf

I have phoned the butcher concerned they will give us a full refund of the price of the turkey,we shall take all the proof of purchase and the barcode off the packaging from the turkey so they know what batch it came from, this was better than I expected so I am happy with that.Lillileaf.

Did they have any idea of what happened?

It's nice they didn't argue and immediately offered you your money back, but still a bit of a blow to your Christmas Dinner plans.
Title: Re: Turkey was off
Post by: LILLILEAF on December 29, 2017, 15:29
They did not argue at all, they offered a refund straight away no questions aked,we only have to take the proof of purchase in to show the manager, ahd we shall get the refund.
Title: the turkey was off part 2!!
Post by: LILLILEAF on January 06, 2018, 09:10
As some of you would have read that our fresh turkey was off,i rang the shop we bouhgt it from, they said no problem you will get a full refund.
Part 2
My husband went with all paper work needed as requested and the bar code off the bag it was in,they have now refused us any refund >:( and say that we are lying  as ther is no carcass,do you really think they would want rotting meat bought in there shop i did not think they would because of contamination,i was wrong question is do i fight it or forget the whole thing?,i have been very good and not told anyone where we bought it from so they can keep there reputation as good meat producers.
They say they sold 300 birds with no coplaints, what do we do?.
Do we have any rights as a cosumer?.

I've always taken back any meat that has been off, as soon as possible after noticing. Giving it back (well wrapped, obviously eugh! Is the only way to prove your point IMO.

I would ring and ask to speak to the owner - then ask why they had said they would refund on the phone but refused in the shop. If they're still not playing straight..
Then I would post my story on any local facebook groups, their own FB page and tweet it.
You don't know for a fact that your turkey was off but you do know they mislead you on the phone. Just word your post carefully. The turkey smelt strange and we didn't think it safe to eat.
And I would contact the council - for all you know you could be complaint 100.

It's possible the turkey was fine and just smelt a bit strange to you - but what are you going to do on Christmas Eve when the shop is shut until whenever? The last thing you want is a family down with food poisoning. People do die from it even nowadays.

At the risk of sounding boastful, Val and I are experienced and knowledgeable about food safety - and the first rule is to use your nose. If it smells off then it's not worth the risk of eating it.  Some meats - like beef we're happy to eat (if it smells / tastes OK) past a useby date but pork and poultry products are a different matter.

Post by: LILLILEAF on January 06, 2018, 12:26
Thanks John for your information,as you say use your nose and common sence,i know the smell of bad meat even after washing the bird was off,as you say poultry is very dangerous to eat when off,i did not want the risk of being very ill.
They spoke to my husband yesterday, but they want to know which day i phoned and who i spoke to,i failed to ask the womans name because she said just speak to any memeber of staff and they will refund your money in full.
My husband spoke to the manager he basically said get stuuffed because he will lose £26.40,its not a sum of money we spend on meat it was a special occasion.
I have never been on face book i would not know how to use it.

Well I think it's disgraceful way to treat a customer and I'd certainly look to giving them £50 worth of bad publicity.  If you'd involved the health people they could have been in real problems.

Having your Christmas meal spoilt is no joke. Incidentally, I started off working in shops and I know some customers try it on (which I know isn't you)  BUT it was drummed into me that when in the wrong, make the customer happy. If I was that butcher you'd have walked out with a refund and some consolation like a large joint of beef.

Feel quite cross on your behalf!  >:(

I will call in next week, take all paper work again and fight my corner,we have spent alot of money in this shop,we have stuck with it since it opened.
If we kept the turkey,it would have hat to stay in a shed as tyhere was no room in the freezer, the shop did not open till the thursday after Christmas, the turkey would have been rancid by then yuk.
Some thing as a good will jesture would have been nice but alass nothing but get stuffed off the manager .

Well if they don't change their attitude, let us know who they are and I'll just ask on the local sites if anyone else got a turkey that was off from them.

I have spoken to the shop owner today,he said we had no pictures or proof,we only had the receipts, but what good would a picture do when some thing is rotten??.
Well I stood my ground and we came to an agreement,in the end he has said we can have some vouchers to the value of £20,it does not cover the whole cost of the turkey or the disappointment of Christmas dinner, but it is a result better than nothing,so we shall carry on buying our meat at this shop.Lillileaf

I'd use up the £20 and never go in again. Shame you hadn't still got it as you could have popped it back when they had a shop full.

If we had another choice we would not go back ever, but they are a big meat outlet open to the public, there prices are good as i can get 12 very large fresh chicken fillets for £12.99,the ones from the super markets seem very watery, they also have large pork chops we like with the skin on and bone in so you can have a chop with crackling, where as the super markets take the fat off and the bone out, they do ribs in packs for a reasonable price so we can put our own marinade on.
The butcher in the town has gone so we are stuck.
I know there are other butchers but there prices are a bit rich for my pocket.

It sounds as though you have the best outcome likely Lillileaf, and your persistence has paid off a little bit. If there has never been a problem with their meat before, hopefully the turkey incident was a one - off, but if there ever is again, I know you will be presenting the offending meat back to them pronto. I hope you never have to though

These people might be of interest as they are primarily conservation and food is a byproduct. Quality is fantastic and the prices are surprisingly good

Johnny 6 over in Bangor do free home delivery all of Anglesey and their prices easily match Llech. We've used them since moving to North Wales so may be worth swapping to? The staff are lovely if ever a problem. You can order online through their website or phone and order in, they also have a facebook page with daily offers on which are worth checking out. Johnny 6 butchers Bangor North Wales (http://johnny6butchers.co.uk/index.php)

I also second Rosewood Farm. Robert is a lovely chap and he really cares about the conservation side. At the moment he's got an offer on for 20% extra meat on the diced and minced boxes he sells.

Thank you for the sites on the butchers,i have had a look at the 2 sites very interesting.
I have decided we shall use our vouchers from the butcher i use at the moment, then i shall never ever use them again,i work very hard to earn my wage,so i want to spend it on good quality meat and not some thing i have to chuck in the bin.
I know i stood my ground on the bad turkey issue, but it should never have come to that.
Thanks to everyone for there advice on this problem.Lillileaf

I have phoned the owner,he said after much moaning and complaining from me! about the turkey,he would give us vouchers for £20.00,the turkey cost £26.40,i went to the shop to pick up the vouchers the owner was not in the shop, the shop manager said she would post the vouchers to me,i gave her our address, she said she would post first thing the following Monday, they did not arrive
I went to the shop yesterday finally I got the vouchers I will go 1 last time use the vouchers up and never go back.Lillileaf

I don’t blame you I wouldn’t be going back either, very poor service for regular customers or not so regular customers. I once stopped frequenting a greengrocers over 2 oranges & a lot of rudeness about trying to get my silver cross prom in. Would rather go without than shop there again. Their loss I used to spend £10/15 a week there 30 years ago.

Snap! I did the same with my small Sainsbury’s over 30 years ago. They didn’t like me in with my silver cross. I told them I would do my weekly shop elsewhere. ...... and I never went back.

It gives you no faith in them or their products when they are so willing to lie, fob you off and generally treat you like manure.
They're not very clever business people either - they've managed to give you £20 and lose your custom. I don't know how much you spent there each week but call it £10 and that means they've lost over a thousand pounds worth of trade over the next couple of years. If they'd refunded your money plus a £20 apology they'd have been better off in the long run.

It has been a long and drawn out issue,i nearly gave up a last week I had had enough, but on Saturday I was near the shop,so as bold as brass I asked for my vouchers,i gave them no chance to argue,i will never go back, and to think we have spent a lot of money there since it was open,i have also sent a lot of people there saying how good their products are,i will never do it again,im finished with them forever.Lillileaf
