Hubbys first error
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:49 »
I dont want to rain on his parade but bless his cottons, I sent him up with some cabbage to put in, thinking he would divide them over several beds. He came back so proud, as usually he digs we plant but he had done it all himself.

when I went up I found this

all 22 in one bed  ??? I dont wnat to tell him they are too close or to go moving them now, as they have all picked up a treat.

Can I harvest some as leaves to allow the others room to carry on growing or is it all a waste of time.  ???

Eat every other one as spring greens. The rest should still heart up. Net them to keep the pigeons off though.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Good for you, Nosh. That's a brilliant example of allotment diplomacy !!!!!
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Nooooooo. cos then he'll just plant the next lot wrong as well ;)

Say something like "Thanks for planting the cabbages, I was really worried that you'd screw it up because I forgot to tell you that I wanted to use some as spring greens so they need planting closer together, but you've done it perfectly *big beaming smile*"

That bed looks about 8x4'.  You shouldn't have a problem with the spacing provided it isn't a huge growing variety, in fact I would have put a couple more in the middle.

Raised beds are meant to be planted much closer together than normal beds.

Cheese makes everything better.

Mine are about that distance apart. Hearting up nicely and keeping the weeds to a minimum ;)

If that's his first error and you've had him more than a week, I'd say you are lucky.  :D
