Rosemary
« on: March 28, 2008, 13:03 »
Last year I attempted to grow Rosemary from seed, but failed miserably!!      Apparently it is not very easy to germinate from seed but it is best to take cuttings from plants.

So.... I have bought a Rosemary plant, and now need advice on how to take cuttings and what to do with them?

Thanks  8)

to germinate the seed soak in warm water for 24 hours and then sow

cuttings you need to take soft wood cuttings [ie] the new shoots

cut them at an angle and strip the leaves about an inch up from cut

then dip in hormone rooting powder and set

Exactly as above but I pop them in a heated propogator, the gentle heat from below gets the roots going that bit quicker, you dont need the top on as you want the base to be warm.

I've never had any problems with Rosemary i just snap long stems off  strim the lower leaves off with my fingers and push them into the ground maybe ten inches or  further down depending on the length of the stem then i water them and forget them. Never failed. I do the same with Roses always worked. Mind you thats the only things that have worked for me. Hugs to all

Heeled cuttings you need , just pull young shoots off with some bark attached. :)

size will greatly depend on variety, some grow huge, as Crissie says, others will stay quite small, but they always can be pruned though.
