Saving seed and viability
« on: October 01, 2018, 13:15 »
Hello. I've some heads of a particularly good lettuce that I've left to go to seed in the hope of getting some fresh for sowing next year.

They've flowered and are now opening out like dandelions and I've been picking the off as they do. But does anyone know how I can tell if they are viable or not?
I don't want to be wasting my time sowing them next Spring if they're no good!

Thanks for any advice

You could sow a pinch, indoors somewhere warm just to check germination - but self-saved seeds are usually viable  :)

i was wondering how your lettuce has faired out? im finding that saving seed brings its own problems, i had some great carrots coming into flower earlier this year and had a storm that broke them down, it actually snapped the tops of, several other plants were also ruined...
Best Regards,

is anyone else finding that purchased seeds are very hit and miss? im going to talk about the carrots that i tried to save seed from those carrots were a main crop, would need to check up what variety, any how after they were destroyed i purchased what were called the same thing, and those carrots grown this year were quite rubbishy!

would there be many on here that save their own veg seed and would be interested in a thread where we could buy/sell/swap ? it would hopefully insure we are getting fresh seed that is at least grown in UK/Ireland

You're in luck spud, a forum for that already exists! It's the Seed Circle sub-forum, within the Growing forum.

thanks for the reply, indeed, i found it since posting, hopefully it will be a success. Most of the uk seed companies wont send seed my way, so i rely on small sellers or swappers

Whereabouts in Ireland are you Spud? Northern or Southern? I’m just back from NI after visiting my sister for a week, she orders her seeds via me  :D
