Title: frozen treats in hot weather
Post by: themagicaltoad1 on May 28, 2018, 14:06
Hi all. Haven't been on here for ages but still keeping hens. I was recently told by someone to freeze sweetcorn in a muffin tray with a bit of water, to make frozen blocks for the girls to pick at in the hot weather. Has anyone tried this?

No, but I will if you will.

For treats I've moved over to calciworms instead of mealworms as they're cheaper and allegedly have more nutrition including calcium, as the name implies.

I never know what to do with all my raspberries so they get a lot of them too. The canny birds guzzle them as the most circumspect look on.

well

People round here think I am bonkers, to be honest I wont argue coz they are

My ladies have ice pops made for them for the hot weather, and they go mad, they know its 2 pm and are sat on the perch waiting for us to walk through the gate with the dish in hand

Mine are made up of this...
5 steak pud dishes
2 strawberrys
5 blueberrys
inch block of cucumber (peeled)
sweet basil leaves about 5 chopped
Mint leaves about 5 chopped
oregano leaves 5 chopped

I chop the fruit & cuke into bite size pieces, chop the herb leaves and place in even amounts and then pour water till about 3/4 full, cover with cling film and freeze.

to serve
place the dish under the cold tap for a few mins until the ice pop pops out nto a dish and serve...

As they melt and go soft my chucks turn into woodpeckers, they love them.

I think you may need some help from a special doctor... :)

Then again.. maybe I do too! Found myself arranging halved strawberries on top of the green salad before serving to the girls the other day.  Presentation being the key to appetising food, of course.

I can't comment on your mental health, but you two are a right pair of softies

I love hearing stories of how people go the extra mile for their girls.  They do appreciate it you know  ;)

Technically chickens are probably best fed just on layers pellets which have been formulated to provide the precise balance of nutrients required for optimum production.
Can you imagine life if every meal was the same - some tasteless bar of survival rations?
I think they do appreciate a varied diet.

I quite agree John but as us humans know complimentary food is good for us and of course pecking at a block of tasty food is better then pecking at each other in boredom.
I do firmly believe herbs added to their diet are benficial to them in many ways and mine loved to be spoilt.

Another little treat is I peel a chilled cucumber down in three strips so its dark green/ white/dark gren etc this is then hung, they will peck the white part and eat the cuke but leave the green flesh, they love that one too and in ths hot weather again helps them keep hydrated and cool.
