How do I know when my chillies are ready?  I habe the grand total of 4 fruits on 5 plants in my cold frame - they look about the right size, maybe a little pale in colour.
Total beginner - please bear with me if I ask daft questions!!

They're ready anytime you want to eat them, but the redder they get the hotter they will be.

How long does it take for them to start turning red?  My chillis (hungarian hot wax) are still green after 3 weeks, should they be starting yet?

some of mine last year took 6 weeks to go fully red, but I used them at various stages for various things. i.e. green for salads etc, red for salads, etc

Can take between 2 - 3 months to ripen depending on type, often the hotter the chilli the longer the ripening process so for habaneros, birdseye and the like your looking at the 3 month end.

For mild chillis like Black Hungarian, jalepeno maybe 2 months?  Last year my chillis seemed to take forever, they had set full size fruit by Late June and were still sitting there just starting to ripen around October though the weather in the later part of the year was poor for ripening chillis, just like now.

For useful info on chilli varieties try:  http://www.thechileman.org/

MIne are just chillies, no clue as to the type!! like small triangle shapes at the moment, they did not get very big last year.  The previous owner planted them.
