What flooring for a chicken coop
« on: February 19, 2012, 21:02 »
After reading this topic below on another forum:

http://www.downthelane.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=18516

this is something im going to do on my allotment but im wondering what would be the best flooring?? Im also thinking of raising it, on railway sleepers so the chooks can get underneath it and then i can screw the base into the sleepers so it wont be going anywhere.

Any ideas?

I have a coop that is raised off the floor on stilts and I used varnished plywood as my flooring. Im thinking also about putting down some old vinyl flooring just to help with cleaning.

Just think about all the places red mite can get into.

They love vinyl flooring to hide under.  2 mites can multiply by millions by the end of the week.

It is a good idea to raise your house off the ground as this helps to prevent vermin damaging the house/or burrowing underneath it. If you raise it high enough you also have extra space for them to run around in. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

I forgot to say I also will be using sealant around the edges of the vynil flooring. You can get sealant that drys hard and not rubbery so it will be more difficult for chicks to peck and scrape at.

We have vinyl on the floor with wood flakes on top. The coop is raised off the ground around 3' which makes it easy to clean. I just lift the vinyl up and tip the wood out every week. I sprinkle plenty of de-diatomaceous earth on the coop floor before replacing the vinyl.
So it's best to leave the vinyl loose so that you can remove it to clean the coop and give the vinyl a good wash every now and then.
Underneath the coop we put their pellets where it's nice and dry.

underneath the perches in my houses I have placed grow bag trays (they fit just great  :D) and have hemcore in them. The birds poop straight into them which makes cleaning out so much easier. If your houses are smaller something like cat litter trays would work  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Today i bought a piece of wood - the type they use for boarding up shops and houses for £3 and i bought a piece of vinyl for £5 its 4ft by 4ft, well just over, i haggled it was originally £10  :D.

Im thinking of fitting and using adhesive on the vinyl so the vinyl is permentantly on stuck down and then sealing around the edges so nothing can get under the flooring?

Red mite have a knack of getting in however well sealed (seals tend to dry out/wear) and then you would have to destroy it all. The vinyl might slide in and out easily for cleaning and could then be changed in time when it wears out. :)
