Slug resistant varieties
« on: May 20, 2012, 17:28 »
I am growing 2 varieties of broad bean this year.

I am growing some Aquadulce Longpod from Real Seeds, which I grew successfully on a small scale last year.   This year I thought I would try some Crimson Flowered Broad Beans from the Heritage Seed Library.

I got 100% germination from both and they both seemed to grow on quite nicely.  Having planted them out though, it seems that the crimson flowered ones are much more susceptible to slug damage.  The Aquadulce have also been nibbled, but have grown through it much better and have shrugged it off. whereas poor old crimson flowered are struggling badly.

I wonder if anyone else has noticed different performance in respect of slug resistance amongst different varieties, either of broad beans or other vegetables.

Some potatoes seem to be more slug resistant than others. I have put in only one row of picasso as the slugs seem to love them.

Try telling that to the slugs which eat my seedlings every year!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I did say less prone - it's not foolproof!

Growing the 2 colours side by side for the last 2 years - they preferred the green  ;)
