Nearly a nasty day today!  We had almost finished, the Doge de Bordeaux (?) type dog was let out onto the field and the Labrador into the small outside bit infront of the stables.......  The lady who let the big dog, Bull, out had not locked the gate (a double gate, locks with a bolt)if you open the gate to go into the outside fenced off bit the main gate has to be unlocked so it was just pushed shut and not secured shut   and Bull opened it and attacked the Labrador, or the Labrdor attacked Bull, I was not sure what happened, all I know was I was holding onto the Lab and had to let go!  It was Bl^^dy scary.  We managed eventually to get them apart, Bull was latched on hard to the Lab (Theo) I managed to get the Lab back into his stable and we then put Bull away.   We checked the Lab, he had 2 tiny cuts,  it could have been so very, very bad.   We are having a meeting on Friday (I think) and I am going to say I am not comfortable with having these strong dogs at the refuge when we really have not the secure space or the experience of those type of dogs.  At one stage I was pulling on Bulls ears, terrified he would turn on me or Beatriz.  I know when I am there on Sunday he certainly will not be going out for a run on the field, he can stay in his fenced off bit.
Scary ending as I said!!

And we do not have any insurance, as we cannot afford it, so how the refuge stands with accidents I do not know! If we are liable as committee members, I might resign!

Sad day at the refuge, the little black pup died last night. She had been taken to the home of a volunteer as she was suddenly losing weight, the mum does not want to feed them anymore, she snaps at them.  They are eating puppy biscuits and lapping. We just hope the others are ok. He was a cutie, jet black with a spot of white on his chest.
We are keeping our fingers crossed for the other pups now.

We are fostering another dog, she was found on the streets. She is a Jack Russell type. Anyone want to adopt her?

Pamela
Ps, as you can see, she fits in well here.

Pamela with a mastiff sized dog the easiest way to part them is to grab their back legs and pull them away - not easy but it does work - they shut off from all outside talking and pain. Also you can buy wooden staves to slide into their mouths to part their jaws. We have had to pull Ollie and Charlie apart on a few occassions. Mastiffs like to be the top dog and if any dog doesn't back down then they can turn.
We now have a couple of plug in diffusers in our house and since having them we have had no problems. I get mine from here, next day free delivery.
Staffies are softer than you think.

I was laying in bed thinking the same thing too about grabbing their back legs! At the time I had forgotten all about it. Hopefully we can get funds soon to get the two big dogs castrated. I am sure it was the female in season that set it all off.
We might have a British press reporter at the refuge this afternoon/ evening, I do hope so, then we might get a plug for help!!

My Ollie has been spayed and it didn't make any difference it's just how mastiffs can be. They are loyal and loving but can have a need to be top dog. They certainly aren't a dog for a novice.

That is what worries me about having strong dogs at the refuge, we are not trained or use to them!

Dear God why did I click on this thread?  We are desperate to get another dog to join our much loved fur baby Honey (a JR). How on earth do you find homes for these dogs?  We went to the RSPCA Cats and Dogs Home and their rehoming policy is so strict that they wouldn't even consider us.  Wouldn't even come and see us to see what we had to offer before we looked at dogs that needed re homing.  We told them we would buy a puppy then and we were told 'well go on then'!  We would have taken two dogs if they'd needed to be kept together.  Breaks my heart.  I work as a Housing Officer and we regularly have to intervene over incidence of animal cruelty.  I'm afraid I just don't understand how anyone can hurt an animal and it makes me very angry.

Pamela, you are doing wonderful work.  Give all the doggies a cuddle from me xxx

Lovely dogs there  :) You are doing sterling work there so don't give up. The dogs need you and people like you. You can work on the insurance, training and other stuff and hopefully resolve those issues. Sounds easy I know  :(

I love dogs, and had my own JR for many years. I'd never have another one though  :D  I think the RSPCA makes rehoming a dog difficult. If it was too easy everyone would have one and they'd end up back at the refuge.  You can get a dog on Freecycle for goodness sake!   :nowink:

I am a volunteer home checker, dog assessor and relocation transport. I dont understand why the RSPCA wont send somebody out to visit your house. Do you both work full time? This could be the reason, however there will other rescues that will allow you to rehome older dogs to full time workers  :)

Nope.  I only work 4 hours per day.  We do live in a flat, but its a large 3 and 1/2 bedroom property which is completely detached. We don't have any neighbours either side, above or below as it is above the laundry and 'communal lounge' of the block.  And because the building is built into a slope our front door is on the ground level but the actual property itself is on the first floor, if that makes sense!  It could have been that, but we were very upset that they wouldn't come and look BEFORE we looked at any doggies to 'check us out'.  The inference being that we are completely incapable of looking after a pet  :(.  So we bought a puppy, have a cat that I rescued when her owner moved and left her behind and have two indoor guinea pigs.  All of them are much loved family pets and very well cared for, if a little spoilt!  ;)

lots of people who live in a flat have dogs without any problems, all they have to do is make sure they have an area close by where they can walk their dogs. Leaving a dog alone for 4 hours is not unreasonable at all.

Refuge update time!!!

Good news.   The Doge de Bordeaux (or what ever he is) is off to Barcelona to a specialist refuge- so this week I am keeping away from the refuge until he has gone.  Just thinking about him makes my hands sweat with nerves!

Peluso, a fat boy, who is about 17months old is being adopted, he is off to the UK to live, Manchester I think.  The refuge that has arranged the adoption for us (a Galgo refuge that has taken us under it´s wing) is helping us find new homes for the dogs.  They will take Shannon, Peluso´s sister too, but not to adopt, to go to the refuge, where she will get better attention, she is very nervous.  There are people around there most of the day, so she will, hopefully, be less scared.  She stayed with us for a littlewhile, she was sterilised and ripped out the stitches and her internal organs popped out   so she was re-operated on and was fine   you can´t even see the scar!

Once Peluso is off we  can buy a new plug for the bath that is on the field, he steals it and runs off with it!  When he was a pup he would dig and dig in the bowl of water until the dish was empty then run off with it in his mouth!!

Their Mum, Celeste, or Shy dog as I call her, is possibly going to Finland!!!  A lady is in contact with me, the Galgo people will find out how to transport her there and the cost, she would have to fly I think.  It would be wonderful for Shy dog, she is such a lovely dog, well deserving a home. She is, I think, the best dog at the refuge.  Here she is:

Now as for the Jack Russel pup, or even Tibet (the dog who had the operation)  they can be transported to the UK easily-   so if anyone wants to adopt, I do not think it is OTT expensive transporting them off!  The Galgo people can do all the arrangements for us.

The Galgo rescue people are also taking Gilda, a Galgo/Podenco cross.  She is a big lean girl.  They do not have a home for her to go to, but being at their refuge she will stand a much better chance, as they specialise in her type of dogs.

2 of the big pups have been adopted (photo coming later) and the small cute pups also, 2 possibly adopted, but one is supposed to be going to a girls granny as a present, the granny is 82 years old, so we might turn them down, as the old girl does not get out much. She can have Pumba free, he is a grumpy dog who needs a quiet house!!!

I have just remembered, I am supposed to ebe emailing the pup photos to the galgo lady!!

What is the fluffy pup saying I wonder?

They all have the same Mum!! they were thrown over the fence on day, while all the dogs were out on the field! It was a wonder they survived! They still had their eyes shut.
