John Innes No 3 in Pots
« on: July 12, 2010, 13:42 »
I've always put permanent plants in tubs into John Innes No3 - it's what my Dad told me to do years ago! just curious to know why we use that as opposed to multi purpose - can anyone enlighten me please? Jude. (PS I always use multi purpose for bedding)

In very simple terms, No. 3 has more nutrients in it for heavy feeding plants. As you go down the numbers, it's suited to smaller plants, right down to JI seed compost.

It's also loam based, not peat based. More info here:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I prefer it to multi purpose compost for seed sowing , cuttings and potting on.

I mean the right no. not no3 for everything ::)

Glad you put the last line in Spana otherwise I'd have had a go at seed sowing with No3 just to see the results!!!! - think you could be on to something with the sowing JI, so much of the multipurpose that I try is full of large bits and pieces (and I don't go for the cheapest, usually middle priced); I'll add a bag to my ever growing garden shopping list!

You can get multi purp with added J Innes. it was discussed on here not long since. I got some and found it very good. I potted up my peppers in it
