Is this worth trying - onion sets?
« on: July 20, 2017, 12:48 »
Clearing away stuff earlier today I came across a bag of tiny onion sets. I'd planted half and then must have put the rest aside to plant 'later'

They look okay. Not shrivelled and just a couple have sprouted a bit. Is there any point in planting any of them this late in the season? I''ve finally got some space - having lifted the early potatoes (and the onions I originally planted!)

I'm quite prepared to be told to put them on the compost heap :)

Personally I'd plant them. I picked up a bag of 80 sets for 20p about a month ago and planted them, closely spaced. They've grown away quickly and I'm currently harvesting leaves for use as 'spring' onions and later on the larger bulbs will be used just like normal onions with the smaller ones being pickled or used whole in stews etc

I doubt day length/weather would allow them to grow into onions for storing, but they should grow enough to make 'stir fry' or salad onions for pulling green, so at least won't be wasted  :)

Thanks everyone. I'm off to get them in. We had a tiny bit of rain last night so the soil is slightly less dry  :D

If they develop proper little onions, they'd also be nice prepared and then popped into bags in the freezer to use as 'pearl' onions in casseroles.  This is what I do with any spring onions that grow too large before I can use them.
