Getting an allotment this time of year
« on: June 14, 2009, 21:57 »
I have been working a 1/4 plot on a friend's allotment while waiting for one of my own.  I have now been told i have got one from now.  I have not seen it yet but have been told it has been recently worked.  I was wondering what people thought I should grow this year assuming it is only a couple of weekends and evenings to make it useable.  I do have some aparagus plants I have grown from seed which I want to use but what else?
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

You can grow lettuce, raddish, spring onion, onions, leeks, swede, beetroot, carrot (Kingston F1), main crop spuds it will help work your soil even a few plants can really help. You may be able to sow cabbabges, cauliflowers, purple broccoli, it just depends on the seeds some are early some late. You could go to a school car boot etc and try to pick up tom plants that someone else has no room for. A few of each may help your rotation for next year. Asparagus pea can still be sown and some other legumes may be ok so not all lost. Start at one end and as you clear an area plant it so you can get the most from your plot.
