Ooo good post.  I'll watch with interest as I never seem to sow anything later in the season.

peapod has hinted at it with her list of already sown.

Apart from the fast moving crops - salad and the like, the more substaintial crops for winter harvest - leeks, sprouts, cabbage etc, should have been sown months ago and be in the ground by now.

The stuff that I've sown in the last few weeks is for spring harvesting.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Forgot to mention Kale...as DD said this was sown about a month ago, but possibly may be worth a try if you have a polytunnel/gh to get the seeds started very quickly and you pick as baby leaves instead of waiting for the full maturity.

Theres not a whole lot for literal winter veg pickings to sow now - I should have read that more closely

There have been a couple of interesting articles in magazines like "kitchen gardener" and "home farmer" about planting winter vegetable in pots / buckets.

I planted out carrots, cabbage, onions and spinich in buckets at the weekend, and they're coming up already.

The general theory seems to be that you sow them in buckets really thickly and then thin and eat as they develop. Also need to water and feed them a lot. It's just my first try at this, but I'm hoping our back garden in sheltered and mild enough for them to provide some veg through the winter... We'll see.
I might be talking rubbish!

I've sown pak choy, tsoi sim, komatsuna and kailaan for autumn crop. They were ready in 5 weeks in the spring.
I'm also going to try to sow them in succession, under protection during the winter, since they're supposed to be fairly hardy. Cross fingers...

I'll be sowing green & red mustard, rocket keeps going in pots in a plastic greenhouse for quite a while, and winter lettuce too, just sown some autumn carrots & beets and chanced my luck with some late mange toute, which might give me a crop if the frosts hold off - I can always eat pea tops if not!
I'm very late with kale & PSB this year, so might have to buy in, parsnips & leeks went in a while back.
