Wilkinsons Onion Sets..
« on: January 11, 2011, 11:17 »
I noticed in my local Wilko's that all their onion sets are already in stock, Stuttgarter, Sturon, Turbo, Red Baron etc..
I have always planted my main sets in April... anyone know why they would be selling them so early?

I would expect them to be in stock at this time of year.

They are far more tolerant of cold than spuds. I always put mine in in March.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So long as you store them somewhere cool they will be ok for whenever your ready to plant, like him up there I normally aim for March planting, before it gets tooo hot.

If you buy onion sets now be carefull to take them out of their bags and store them cool and dry. It is a long time to stare them for probably 3 months and they go mouldy easily.

I always get Sturon sets from Wilkos and over the years I have had results varying from good to fantastic. This year I intend to give Setton sets a try, as anyone seen this variety in Wilkos.

I have always found wilkos sturon to be great but their red baron has nearly always gone to seed for me both last year and the year before that. Will be popping down to wilkos at the weekend to get my Sturon for this season.
