First time I've shown veg.
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:35 »
Untill last Saturdays Fryerning & Ingatestone Horticultural Society's summer show I'd never shown any veg,but I gave it a go.
Entered 8 classes and got placed in 4  :D ,Rhubarb 2nd,Cucumber (Passandra) 2nd,Carrots (Flyaway) 3rd,Onions (Bedfordshire  Champion) 3rd.
The most satisfying part of it all was not having grown them specially for showing, just run of the mill standard allotment produce.
Might well enter a few bits and bobs in the autum show.
Very sadly no photos as my camera has been lost  :( .

Thats Great :D

Well done :D Do you think you'll be growing anything specifically for showing now youve done that? :)

Hello Jamie,I would'nt grow any thing specially, but would adjust sowing times by perhaps sowing half as much as normal then sowing the other half a little later so we still have produce as early as poss but also have some at the right time for showing  :D , having said that I am wondering what sugar snap peas are like to grow and more importantly eat  ,as there were only 3 entries in that class.
There, the cats out of the bag,I think I'm hooked on this showing lark.

Muckshifter, sugarsnap peas seem to be quite easy to grow and they taste good.  I usually eat them as I am working and very few make it as far as the kitchen.  Even fewer get cooked because I keep snacking on them before they get to the pot.

I'll second the sugarsnaps they're really lovely and you get a great yield cos you're eating the pods as well  :D
