Climbing French Bean Question
« on: May 21, 2009, 21:34 »
Hi all

I have Climbing French Beans in pots at present, which were sown 18/04 and have subsequently been potted on and have been hardened off in the cold frame.

I was going to plant them out last weekend, but the wet weather put paid to that plan, so they are still in their pots, hoping to be planted out this weekend.

Over the last couple of days they have gone from looking very healthy, to a bit sickly looking and gone much paler. Is this a sign of them needing to be out of their pots and should they be okay once planted out? Or is it something more sinister?

Advice welcome please.

Thanks

Richard

My Cobra beans, which are in big tubs in the polyg/h, have done exactly the same thing and they are about 2 ft high :(
I wondered if the compost has just run out of feed, but thought beans didn't need feeding, so i'm confused :(

I think this is probably just a growth stage when the leaves and shoots are growing faster than the roots can supply nutrients. Equally it could be temporary manganese defficiency. I am sure they will start to grow normally but you could try a foliar feed to help them.

Thanks Salmo

Weather looks good for the w/e  :) so I will get them planted out and see how they go and if they still need a helping hand, will try the feed.
